What is a wheel alignment?

|
A wheel alignment is an adjustment to the suspension of the vehicle that affects tire wear and handling of a vehicle. Most cars made today require adjustments to all four wheels as opposed to only the front wheels, which had been the norm prior to 1985. Poor alignment can cause serious safety problems during high speed and accident avoidance maneuvers, as well as permanently damaging the tires and severely reducing the tires' life.

Does my alignment have to be done when I replace tires?

No. Changing tires will not change the wheel alignment. However, when new tires are installed the old tires should be inspected closely for signs of alignment wear. With many of today's tires costing $50.00 to $100.00, wearing them out prematurely due to poor alignment simply does not make sense.
